SUSE Studio, by invitation only

SUSE Studio, a web service by Novell, lets you build your own customized or rather personalized Linux distro, SUSE branded!

You may select from a huge list of packages, add your logo, build a minimal (aka JeOS, stripped down) distro, download as a Virtual Machine or an ISO, its your choice. Very nice but.....as far my analysis goes, it is suitable for hobbyists or intermediate Linux users. It is more of a web-based DIY theme builder that lets you build a custom GDM+GNOME/KDE themes and a splash.xpm for Grub., with an added advantage of package selection and wrapping it all up in an ISO or a VM.

SUSE is indeed a very well maintained and properly designed Linux distribution, and rolling your own distro with SUSE as the base definitely puts you to advantage.

All good! but not for Embedded developers, what you do not get:

  • Custom Base (though staying with SUSE base is a good idea)
  • Custom built kernel
  • Choice of a File System (JFFS)
  • Custom built boot loader and even choices (Uboot, Redboot, etc)
  • Custom Root FS
  • Choice of CPU Architectures (ARM, MIPS, etc)
  • BSP customizations
  • X or Framebuffer?
A toolchain or better an SDK (LinuxDK?) would have been a better idea I would say!

As an embedded developer, I would like to have flexibility with all the above mentioned. Have a look at Timesys LinuxLink (https://linuxlink.timesys.com/3/Home), awesome! Signup for a free trial. With Timesys you get to select from a wide range of CPU Architectures, and some (few) of the above mentioned.

At SensorFlock.com, I am currently developing a Linux Development kit (LDK) that provides with you all of the above, isn't that great? based on Eclipse engine and Python.

Oh Google Android? with JAVA only sdk all I can do is leave that on to you to "think".
